News from Durban

January 27th, 2010 by Geoffrey Posted in General, Photos | No Comments »

Andrew Heathcote writes with news from the Durban fleet.

On the fourth Saturday of January we finally had some Extra sailing in Durban. Unfortunately due to numerous other commitments it wants only the third time this summer that we have managed to get the majority of our fleet out. Three of our four boats were on water.

We had four sailors though with Jof out from the UK for a bit of sun so we did a bit of boat swapping. As you can see from the pictures it was a scintillating day on the water with about 4 to 6 knots of wind and about 32° of temperature not to mention the humidity! Some new innovations we tested, most notably Andrew Tarboton’s new ‘Tarbofoils’ (patent pending). It is not clear to us if the foils are new or just a new colour, but it is clear that they are orange! It is also clear that although they are not necessarily any faster through the water they will ensure that the rescue boat sees and gets to you quickly, which leads us wonder what it is that Tarboton is worried about?

For the third and final race of the day Tarboton lent his boat to one of our Laser sailors with a view to converting him. The end result was a gybe mark tangle between the potential convert and other Laser resulting in a reasonably large hole in the side of Tarboton’s boat. The ‘Tarbofoils’ were however undamaged. Apparently the hole will be fixed by next Saturday when we hope to have more on the water action.

Extra Nationals & Notice of AGM

January 17th, 2010 by Geoffrey Posted in General, Organisation | No Comments »

Hi All

Extra Nationals is a go!

5-7 February, along with the 420’s. Most of us will need to take leave on the Friday as racing is scheduled to start at 10h30. Entry is R100 with an additional R70 for those who haven’t paid their subs yet…! We will be doing a phone around – it will be great to see everyone on the water again! If you guys won’t be sailing, please think about lending your boats out to guys who can.

The AGM will be held on the Friday after sailing.

See you on the water!

Durban Extra Sailing

October 28th, 2009 by Geoffrey With the Tags: | Posted in General | No Comments »

In the last year, the Extra fleet in Durban has recorded a 100% increase in the size of the fleet. There are now four active sailors of the Extra in Durban. For the coming season, every effort has and is being made to promote the class and grow the numbers on the water. A mini committee has been setup consisting of Andrew Tarboton, Andrew Heathcote and Andrew Butler. Their aim is to promote the image of the class, ensure the racing is fair and good, swop boats with prospective buyers of into the class, and to have fun all round. A number of people have been identified as potential buyers and sailors of Extra’s, and these people will be invited on a particular day when a support boat will go out and sailors can swop amongst boats, and test the boats for themselves. It is envisaged that these days will happen on a regular basis.

All the boats have been worked on during the off season, ensuring they are in tip top condition for the racing that promises to be fierce and fun. The season officially started on Saturday 3rd October. However, due to prior commitments, none of the sailors took part. All boats aim to be on the water on the 18th Oct.

We will keep you further updated with information as the season progresses.

Class Update

October 3rd, 2009 by Geoffrey Posted in General | No Comments »

Hi All

Just a bit of news about what has been going on in the Extra class recently…

The Southern Spars Spring regatta kicked the season off with 14 entries. It was mainly a light wind regatta which mixed things up a bit. Sunday morning came with a bit of breeze which meant that by lunch time some of us were pretty tired. Luckily, the wind eased & the afternoon race was quite manageable.

The weekend after that, three Extra teams entered the MAC 12hr event. Once again , the wind was light which allowed two Lasers to get away & about a lap ahead. When the breeze did eventually fill in, the Extras were definitely the fastest boats on the water – apart from the Moth! It would have been really interesting to see an overall standing, but unfortunately, the results were split up into classes.

Next on the calendar is the Voelvlei Points Series (17 & 18 October) – 2 weeks time! We will be doing a phone around again – please say “Yes, I will be there..!” Here is a weather link: http://www.yr.no/place/South_Africa/Western_Cape/Voëlvlei_Dam/ for those interested. Cheap camping, cheap food, cheap… umm…beer & of course, good sailing.

The next sponsored event at ZVYC is on the 1rst of November (North Sails Regatta) – another date to diarise…!

Thursday evening sailing is also back on the cards, now that the evenings are getting longer. Generally, there will be some of us down there if the weather is good enough – another link: http://www.trax.co.za/zeekoevlei_weather.htm

Keep an eye on it!

& Lastly, welcome to Thomas Sutherland who has bought Stephen’s X845. Also, Francois Korver (X829) who was sailing the MAC 12hr, Albert Geiger (X864) at TSC & Dave Oldham (X897) in the Eastern Cape.

Cheers~

Mac12 2009

After the event was expanded to allow for Extras, Milnerton Aquatic Club’s 12 hour regatta saw three Extra teams sailing from 6.30am-6.30pm. With roughly 3-5 sailors in each team the turnout wasn’t bad – and the event was far more manageable (and enjoyable…) than the 24 hour variety – so hopefully we’ll see a even stronger turnout next year.

Below are a couple of photos from the day, you can also see some by Craig Leslie here.

General Update: boats for sale, Intasure & Voelvlei Points

September 22nd, 2009 by Geoffrey With the Tags: , , | Posted in General, Organisation | No Comments »

Boats for sale: The classifieds page has been updated with 3 boats currently for sale.

intasure logoIntasure: Intasure has recently got involved in sponsoring a few sailing events, such as the Simonstown Keelboat Spring Regatta & a team for the Lipton Cup. It is really refreshing when a company steps up to the plate like these guys & decides to support some local sailing events. Give these guys a call if you are looking at insuring your boat or anything else & show your support for someone who supports your sport…!

The Extra Class supports all sponsors of sailing and will publish brief write-ups by class members who are sponsored while sailing, subject to approval by the Committee

Next Points Series: The next points series is on the 17th & 18th of October at Voelvlei. Check it out http://www.vyc.co.za/This is one of the nicest places to sail: clean water, lots of space, cheap camping etc. Please consider sailing this event. It will be really good to have some decent numbers attending. Let’s keep up the momentum that we have gained…!

Spring Regatta Results

September 20th, 2009 by Geoffrey With the Tags: , | Posted in Event Reports | No Comments »

springregattaZVYC’s Spring points Regatta over the weekend of the 12th and 13th of August saw a strong 15 boat Extra fleet (making us the largest senior class…).

After much waiting around day 1 allowed just one race before the wind died again. The second day was an improvement, although suffered from fewer boats after a number of sailors were scared off by the morning’s rain…

You can read ZVYC’s report on the event here, class results are below and take a look at Angela Gray’s great photos here and here.

Mac-12

September 2nd, 2009 by Geoffrey With the Tags: , | Posted in Organisation | No Comments »

mac12-2009This year sees Milnerton Aquatic Club’s Mac-12, now in its 2nd year, accept entries from the Extra Class along with the already present Lasers and Dabchicks. The event differs little from the club’s popular 24 hour race and runs from 6.30am to 6.3pm on Saturday the 19th of September.

So far we have two teams entering: Thomas van der Ploeg and myself are sailing with a couple of non-class members, in an effort to convert them, and Ian Macrobert, Markus Progli and Stephen du Toit are entering as Team Intasure.

It would be great to see a strong Extra contingent at the event. Take a look at the event webpage for more information and get in touch with the committee to let us know if you are sailing or are looking for a team to sail in.
